Visiting Tokyo a few years back one of the stranger highlights was massive billboards of a very somber Tommy Lee Jones running throughout the city. We were a little intrigued and came to find out he's schlepping for a drink called Boss Coffee. Apparently it doesn't end there, as indicated by number of very puzzling TV spots we found on YouTube...

In 1903, a circus elephant named Topsy at Coney Island’s Luna Park went berserk and killed three people including an abusive trainer, who tried to feed her a lighted cigarette.

The elephant was considered a threat and the owners wanted it executed. When animal advocates protested the proposed method of hanging, Thomas Edison saw a publicity opportunity and suggested electrocution with AC.

Topsy was fed carrots laced with cyanide and then electrocuted with 6,000-volts AC. She died "without a trumpet or a groan" within seconds.
Topsy’s execution was a public spectacle: about 1,500 people attended and Edison even filmed the event.

Seeing good pinstriping in action is a really rare and impressive fete. Not sure who this is but they're puttin' it down for sure.

There Will Be Blood

The Loss Prevention, along with our crack(head) team of writers, in association with The Seventh Letter, has just recently completed the art direction and production of our first large-scale public mural of 2008. Located on Melrose Ave @ Heliotrope in East Hollywood the wall was executed last month over the course of a couple of rain-free days by artist's DAME (LA), VICIOUS (Portland), RONS (Toronto), and SEVER (Atlanta). The history of this particular spot is pretty crazy, having seen numerous high-caliber works throughout the years by many contemporary urban legends, including DAIM, BATES, REVOK, RIME, BANKSY, RETNA, SMASH, MQUE and SABER just to name a few. As always, we intended on documenting the process a little better, but per usual we kinda fell flat. Nonetheless, here's what we do have... a bunch of really random flicks from the production process as well as a decent shot of the finished mural (apologies for the shadows). As always select the flicks to view them large. Also we'd be remiss if we didn't send out big thank you's to everyone that contributed over the course of those few days. Thank You! Plus... special shout to Osh and Home Depot. Without their private funding none of this would've been possible.
